About Us

Who We Are

The mission of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Association for the Blind is to help blind and visually impaired individuals achieve the best possible quality of life by providing compassionate services and to prevent vision loss through education and early detection for people of all ages.

Founded in 1918, The Association for the Blind is a non-profit organization that serves Northeastern Pennsylvania, including Luzerne, Wyoming, Wayne, and Pike Counties.

Our Social Service programs are offered to individuals who are legally blind or have low vision, which is defined as having a visual acuity of 20/70 or worse in the better eye with best correction or a corresponding field loss. With the goal of improving the quality of one's life and maintaining his/her independence, the Association offers the following services:

  • Adjustment to Vision Loss
  • Independent Living
  • In-Home Support
  • Social/Recreation Events
  • InSight Kids Club of NEPA

Our Prevention of Blindness programs are offered to people of all ages and demographics.  We offer three unique services, which are focused on helping prevent blindness locally:

  • Vision Screenings at Child Care Centers, Head Start, Kindergarten Registrations, and Senior Centers
  • Eye Health & Safety Education programs
  • Marilyn Moore Maslow Vision Resource Center

There is no doubt that someone you know has been touched by the compassion, professionalism, and quality of these services.

We are not only committed to addressing the needs of the blind and visually impaired individuals, we are also active in the prevention of blindness. Our services reach people of all ages and walks of life in Luzerne, Wyoming, Wayne and Pike Counties.

Our trained and qualified staff are advocates for all of our clients. They work to develop innovative education and training programs to provide people who are blind and visually impaired with the tools they need to become independent and successful.

We are responsive to the ever-changing needs of our clients.  By fostering close relationships with partner organizations, we build trust and support in order to keep our clients informed of opportunities and facilities that are available to them beyond our scope of service.
“There is no lovelier way to be thankful for your sight, than by giving a helping hand to someone in the dark.”
